Wallpapers

Each month, we release a new wallpaper for desktop and mobile devices, inspired by themes and pictures from our research in Astro, Particle and Plasma Physics. All files can be downloaded free. This ongoing series is part our of public outreach activities and offers a visual perspective on our research beyond academic formats.

June’s wallpaper shows LST-1 at dawn on La Palma.

The first Large-Sized Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array is designed to detect faint flashes of Cherenkov light produced by cosmic gamma rays in Earth’s atmosphere. Researchers at the RAPP Center contribute to the analysis and interpretation of these observations in our research in high-energy astrophysics.

This month's wallpaper shows an HOO image of the region between Serpens and Sagittarius, featuring two star-forming regions. On the left, hydrogen in the nebula glows red, lit up by the young star cluster Messier 16. This area is also home to the famous Pillars of Creation is currently studied by the MAGIC and LST collaborations as a possible source of very-high-energy gamma rays.

Inspired by the WDR Lokalzeit TV segment about the IceCube Upgrade and the involvement of RAPP scientists from Ruhr University Bochum and TU Dortmund, our April wallpaper shows a photo from the South Pole taken by PhD student Jo Werthebach during a winterover, who is featured in the TV report.

You can find the segment here (in German, starting at minute 17).
